SEDIMENT CONTROL

Sediment Control is a practice or a device designed to retain eroded soil on a construction or industrial site, so that it does not wash off and cause water pollution to a nearby stream, river, lake, or ocean. Sediment Control is usually employed together with erosion controls measures, which are designed to prevent or minimize erosion and thus minimize the need for sediment controls.

GROUNDWATER

Groundwater is the water located beneath the earth’s surface. Typically, groundwater is thought of as liquid water flowing through shallow aquifers, but technically it can also include runoff, soil moisture, permafrost (frozen soil) and wash water from construction sites.

FILTRATION

Filtration is the process through which impurities such as sediment and unwanted metals are removed from water.

pH

pH is a measure of the acidity of an aqueous solution. Solutions with a pH less than 7 are said to be acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 alkaline. Pure water has a pH very close to 7.

CLARIFICATION

Clarification is the removal of fine, particulate solids from liquids. The purpose is to improve the quality of the liquid, and the removed solids often are discarded as sludge to landfill. The methods of clarification include gravity sedimentation, centrifugal sedimentation, filtration and magnetic separation.

COAGULANT & FLOCCULANT

Suspended solids in the water like clay particles can be dispersed by adding a coagulant. This is a chemical that has an opposite charge to that of the particles in suspension. Now having no charge the particles are more likely to collide and stick together. A flocculant is now introduced to speed up this process and form an insoluble gel around the particles. When the particles are large enough they sink to the bottom of the settling tank so that they can be removed.
